TBR welcomes Carrie James Haynes

TBR: Welcome to TBR, Carrie. Will you share a little bit about yourself?
Carrie: I’m a Southern girl who now lives with my husband, children, and two dogs in New England. My children laugh at me because I consider Southern a nationality. I’m an avid reader who has a fascination with history which reflects in my writings. My latest series with Whiskey Creek Press, Tides of Charleston, is set in colonial Charleston. The Judas Kiss was just released in January which will be followed by The Promise in May, 2012 and Another Night Falls in September, 2012. Last fall, I decided to take a path that many authors have before me…I went Indie under my pen name Carrie James Haynes. I released the beginning of a fantasy saga, Whispers of a Legend. Now it’s my hope to expand my Indie writings with the release of Daughter of Deceit.

TBR: Tell us about DAUGHTER OF DECEIT and where it's available.
Carrie: My latest release, Daughter of Deceit, is a historical romance with a touch of paranormal elements. You can find it on Amazon.

TBR: Please tantalize us with a story blurb or excerpt.
Carrie: Blurb:
Someone wants Alyce Hythe dead…

Shunned from London society for being the daughter of England’s most notorious spy, Alyce Hythe desires only to clear her father’s name. For years, she has been hidden away from all prying eyes, given a new identity and told to forget who she was. But strange things have been happening causing old rumors to once more be whispered.

Long has Lord Julian Casvelyn lived with guilt brought on when his brother was murdered by England’s most infamous traitor. But one eventful night has changed everything Lord Julian believed about his brother’s death. Never did he suspect the woman he has just saved from certain harm is the daughter of that man. Now Julian is caught in midst of a conspiracy and desire for that woman.

Thrown together by fate, the two search for answers long denied them and along the way discover a love that can free them both.

Excerpt:
Thankful indeed she could breathe again at least for a moment. She turned to stand by Lissa, but instead she froze upon the sight. The last person she ever expected to see this night stood in front of her.
She froze in her spot. His wide mouth curved into a vague smile which could easily turn hard she suspected. He looked quite striking, handsome and elegant in his crisp black and white evening clothes. His dark eyes darkened intensely upon her. Before she had a chance to protest, his arm gripped her elbow firmly.
“Oh, no, my dear, I think not,” his utterance carried a hard edge which startled her. “I have long tried to gain an audience with you and have been reputed one way or another. If you choose to make a scene, it will not bode well for you. You may have been hiding in the nest of the Arungdon, but I can guarantee you that legally you are still the ward of my grandfather and I…”
“Please, Lord Casvelyn, you do not have to resort to threats,” she turned her head to see if any other's attention lay upon them, but none seemed interested. Her gaze shifted back to him. “What, pray, could you have to talk to me? Charles did send his appreciation for you saving me. He assured me he had taken care of the situation and the magistrate...”
“Come. Come. Miss Rufford…or should I say Hythe. I believe there is much we could talk of.”
She glanced back over her shoulder as he edged her along beside him. “Where are you taking me? It will not be proper…”
He cut her words short. “No one will see, I can assure you. I have arranged how I can I say this a few minutes where we will not be disrupted. Then you can rush back to your lordship.”
She watched Lord Casvelyn nod to a man in front of him, a tall man tawny hair and blue eyes. The man nodded back. Immediately, she felt herself being flung into a side door, closing tightly behind her. She could only imagine why Lord Casvelyn thought it necessary to have a guard at the door.
The room was small, quaint in appearance. There was no fire lit nor candle only the moonlit shone in light. He gestured to her to sit upon a settee. She hesitated, but then complied. To her dismay he sat beside her.
She found it difficult to catch a breath with him so near. He stared at her in a manner which made her remember all too well being in his arms with his lips upon hers.
“Now will you please explain yourself so I can rejoin Charles.”
“Ah, yes, the love of your life. I have heard. Unfortunately, I tend to doubt your proclamation of feelings.”
She stared at him and he returned it. He sat close to her, too close. She scooted back but he moved, allowing only her a scant space between her and this man who made her skin shiver with just his touch. “How dare you,” she uttered under her breath. “You don’t know me. Charles and I love each other greatly…”
“Do you?” he asked in a low voice. “Are you in the habit of sharing kisses with another while in the deep throbs of love for another? Come. Do not think I have forgotten having you in my arms. Kissing you, touching you...if not interrupted, perhaps it would have lead to more than...”
She slapped him, hard, and attempted to rise. He thwarted her with his two strong hands, pulling her down to him.
“You are no gentleman!”
“Perhaps,” he answered her, but his voice softened. “Perhaps.”
His hands released her back to her seat. What did he do to her that made her act as if she had not a reasonable thought in her head?
"Tell me, Miss Hythe, what are you up to? What plan do you have? Don’t think your friend, Lord Tregilgas can save you. If I so desire, I can have you escorted out under my care.”
“You make no sense, Lord Casvelyn. You come to me with demands that I return with you. Why should I? True, Colonel Tolworthy is my guardian, but in truth I barely know him. I have been on my own for a great deal of time of my life. Why should I be a burden to him now? It is only a few months more than I will not be.”
“Listen to me carefully, my dear. I had no knowledge that you still resided within England until three weeks ago. In all I find the whole of the situation unacceptable. I’m trying to rectify this. Believe me. I believe you are in danger.”
“Then do not worry about me. Charles has seen to my safety. You may question me, but I trust Charles. He would never allow harm to befall me as I would never allow harm to him.”
“Answer me this. Do you know no matter if you hold your father is innocent, the world does not? No matter if your young Marques holds to you, you are walking into social damnation, fair or unfair. It will not be pleasant. How long do you think it will take for someone to figure out who you are? I would wager it will not be long. And then there is the matter of the threat upon your life?”
“You are mistaken that I am trying to run from my name. I am not. I have all my life since my father’s death faced his disgrace although I was unaware of it until I was seventeen. No one thought it necessary to inform me how my father died. All I knew was that he was dead. Not until Charles told me. He has been my only true friend, my Lord. I have only once visited my father’s grave and it was only through Charles I did so. Do you know what it is like to see your father’s grave ostracized from holy ground for they deem he committed suicide?”
“I know lost. I feel it every day. I dealt with my brother’s death knowing that the fiend that killed him also lay in the ground. But with your words you uttered to me, I find myself questioning all about my brother’s death. And with those words, I questioned the wisdom in allowing you this Season.”
As he spoke, he astonished her with his movement, transforming her back to that night, that room, that embrace. He moved closer, so close it seemed she could no longer claim air between them. His arms encircled her and pulled her face upward toward his. His touch startled her. She looked at him in surprise. She saw his intent, yet made no resistance. Wanting to protest, her body rebelled against the thought.
A gasp escaped her lips as he lowered his head to hers. His lips moved against hers, firm yet yielding. She melted into the sensation his kiss inflicted, the thrilling excitement and warmth flowing through her body. Her mind told her to resist though her body paid no attention to the warning. Instead, she responded to him. Gently he prodded her lips with his tongue to part. Slowly as if giving her time to get used to the idea, he slipped his tongue inside.
Within her a voice called to her to be sensible. He was dallying with her, no more, no less to prove his point. Yet, she ignored the voice choosing instead to surrender to the want within her and parted her lips fully to admit him. An intimacy flowed within her, so wonderful, awakening parts of her body she didn’t know were alive.
His arms tightened around her as pleasure cascaded through out her body. His kiss lingered. He didn’t stop with one. He kissed her again and again, astonishing her and evoking shivers that flowed down her body. A series of pleasurable sensations left her crying for more. He kissed her again, more aggressive, more demanding. Within her she had long lost any rational thought for he had her mesmerized.
She felt his hand move up and down her back. Her skin felt hot with his touch. His hand moved upward until it cupped her nape, caressing her. She could not believe what his meandering touch did to her. His lips descended down her chin to her neck. A cry escaped her when his lips found a sensitive spot which sent vibrations cascading through out her. Sensations she had never known yet desired. She had never been held in this way by anyone. Never had she felt so alive.
The next moment he held her head in his hands as if she was his captive. He ravished her mouth. Shock tensed through her. She could feel the need within him for her submit. Then as if reason took hold, he drew back. His eyes never left her widen eyes. He reached over and in a slow gentle motion caressed her face.
“Tell me now of this undying love you have for another,” he said demanding an answer from her.

TBR: Are you a plotter or pantser?
Carrie:  Pantser

TBR: How do you develop your characters?
Carrie: I begin with a plot. The characters develop from that point. I feel my characters come to life as I write.

TBR: Do you have a favorite quote you’d like to share?
Carrie: I have so many quotes I love to turn to, but one in particular has stayed with me. I love Robert Frost's poetry. My favorite poem of his is the Road Not Taken. The last lines of the poem...

Two roads diverged in a wood, and I,
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference.

Helps me remember that nothing good comes easy.

TBR: Did any music inspire your book? Do you have a playlist?
Carrie: During Daughter of Deceit, I listened to a lot of One Republic especially their song, Secrets.

TBR: Which of your characters would you most/least like to invite to dinner, and why?
Carrie: I would love to have dinner with Charles from Daughter of Deceit. He was such an interesting character. He was Alyce’s best friend in the story. I think I would like to have someone like him too for a friend, interesting, intelligent and caring.

TBR: While creating your books, what was one of the most surprising things you learned?
Carrie: When I first began to write, I didn’t realize how absorb you become in your book. When you’re in a grove writing and you look up surprised to see hours have flown by that seemed like minutes.

TBR: Tease us with one little thing about your fictional world that makes it different from others.
Carrie: The first thing that comes to mind is the mix of traditional Regency romance with a ghost story. I believe readers enjoy the added element. Doesn’t everyone enjoy a good ghost story?

TBR: What's next for you?
Carrie: I have two more releases coming this year with the Tides of Charleston series- The Promise and Another Night Falls. I’m also excited to continue with my fantasy series, Whispers of a Legend. Part Three- Vision of Destiny should be released at the end of February or first of March.

TBR: What’s the most challenging aspect of writing? Most rewarding?
Carrie: Good question. My most challenging is taking the leap into the world of Indie. I absolutely love the control I gained by going this route with some of my work, but it also presents challenges especially when it comes to editing. It is awfully hard to edit your own work.  Most rewarding? Having people enjoy what I write.

TBR: What’s the most interesting comment you have received about your books?
Carrie: I read all the reviews and take all comments to heart- the good and the bad. The one though that I will never forget is one that one of readers of Whispers of a Legend wrote-‘Carrie James Haynes has potential to be next well known scifi/fantasy author.’ I was touched.

TBR: Who are some of your favorite authors and books? What are you reading now?
Carrie: Favorite authors. Oh, wow! I have so many. Current authors include Teresa Medeiros, Nora Roberts, Ruth Cardello and Annette Blair. I’m reading one of Annette Blair’s new release- Untamable Rogue. Just finished off, Bittersweet by Jannine Gallant.

TBR: Where can readers find you on the web?
Carrie: Readers can find me on Jerri’s Blog (http://www.jerrihines.blogspot.com), Castle in the Air blog (http://www.carriejames.haynes.blogspot.com) or Facebook fanpage Novel Works (  https://www.facebook.com/pages/Novel-Works-by-Jerri-Hines/112059205487095 ) or join me on Twitter at @jhines340 or @CarrieJHaynes

TBR: Thanks for visiting TBR, Carrie. All the best to you.

TBR welcomes Patrice Lyle

TBR: Welcome to TBR, Patrice. Will you share a little bit about yourself?
Patrice: Hi! By day, I’m in a Naturopathic Mentorship at my mother-in-law’s wellness center. And by early mornings, nights and weekends, I’m a fiction writer. I started my first novel when I was ten years old and since then I’ve written three screenplays, seven novels, and a few short stories. My sixth novel was just published by Leap Books.

TBR: Tell us about LETHALLY BLONDE
Patrice: Lethally Blonde is a YA paranormal novel about a fashion-loving teen demon who spies for the devil.

TBR: Please tantalize us with a story blurb or excerpt.
Patrice: If Elle Woods were a teenage demon, her name would be Morgan Skully. Morgan is the world's only blonde demon girl, and she's got a brand new, very unusual after school job.  Spying for the Devil.  She'd much rather use her cloak-and-dagger skills to spy on hottie-licious Derek with her friends, but the Devil won't take no for an answer.  Luckily for Morgan, her new boss is kinda hot.  Her assignment is simple: find out who at Pitchfork Prep is funneling secrets to the Siberian Werewolf Council.  If she succeeds, pedicures and platinum highlights are just the beginning.  But if she fails, she'll be expelled before she can woo Derek into asking her to the Brimstone Ball!

TBR: What inspired you to write about the theme?
Patrice:
When I was pondering what to write next, I started thinking about movies and novels that I loved. Well, Legally Blonde instantly popped into my mind and I was like, what if Elle Woods were a teenage demon? And voila, Morgan Skully – the blonde fashion-loving demon in Lethally Blonde – was born. Or should that be spawned? Lol. Character always drives the story for me. Once I come up with the character, then the plot naturally arises from him or her.

TBR: Are you a plotter or pantser?
Patrice: I’m what I call a “reformed pantser.” Meaning that in my heart and soul, I’m a pantser. I love writing a story by the seat of my pants, breathlessly finding out what happens next as my fingers hit the keyboard. But I’ve written myself into so many corners that way so I had to change my ways. Now what I do is write the first three chapters pantser style and then I plot out the rest of the book using an Excel spreadsheet to create a scene-by-scene outline of the book. Then I go back and finish the book. Sometimes things change as the story develops, but usually I stick to the outline.

TBR: Do you have a favorite quote you’d like to share?
Patrice: Yes! From my father…he always says DEQ! For “Don’t Ever Quit!” It’s my writing mantra.

TBR: Did any music inspire your book? Do you have a playlist?
Patrice: I wish I could be an author who creates a really cool playlist to write to, but I just can’t. I have to be in complete silence (with the exception of the meowing of one of our three cats and the keyboard as my fingers tap the keys) to create. I can’t even work in coffee shops because the noise is too distracting for me. So I write in my office, which is very quiet. Except when the neighbor likes to get carried away with his leaf blower J

TBR: Which of your characters would you most/least like to invite to dinner, and why?
Patrice: I would most like to invite Morgan to dinner. Writing her character always put me in a great mood. She’s funny and loves pink so I’m sure we’d be heading to a restaurant that serves on pink china with pink linens. Least likely? That’s an easy one for me…Penelope. She’s such a snot that even I can’t stand her. Nothing bugs me more than stuck-up people.

TBR: Tease us with one little thing about your fictional world that makes it different from others.
Patrice: I’d say it’s my take on demons. They’re usually portrayed as scary and evil, but Morgan Skully is the polar opposite of those things. She’s a blonde, fashion-loving demon who spies for the devil. And speaking of the devil, in Lethally Blonde, he looks like a surfer and his favorite tie is his surfboard one. He’s tan with dark blondish, wavy hair and Morgan’s got a total crush on him.

TBR: Any other published works?
Patrice: Yes! I was a contributor to the how-to-anthology Many Genres, One Craft. It was published by Headline Books and is a wonderful resource on the craft of writing. It was put together by my alma mater, Seton Hill University, where I received my Master’s degree in Writing Popular Fiction in 2003 (fabulous program). I also have a paranormal middle-grade mystery novel in the works currently with Leap Books.

TBR: Who are some of your favorite authors and books? What are you reading now?
Patrice: I absolutely love reading on my Kindle while walking on my treadmill. I walk 3 miles every morning and would not trade it for the world. Love it! I am currently reading Toys by James Patterson. I just finished Embrace by Jessica Shirvington; Only The Good Spy Young by Ally Carter, The Gossip Ghouls: Zombies and Lipstick by Z, and the entire Peachville High Demons series by Sarra Cannon. I’m also going to read all of the releases from the authors in 2K12, a group of debut YA and middle grade authors that I’m part of. Check out our website www.classof2k12.com for all the exciting releases! My very favorite book of all time is The Charm School by Nelson DeMille.

TBR welcomes Marta Szemik

TBR: Welcome to TBR, Marta. Will you share a little bit about yourself?
Marta: Thank you for having me here. Two Halves is my debut YA urban fantasy novel and I’m so proud of it. It’s been part of me for over three years now and I’m glad I get to share it with the world.
I have two wonderful kids and a hubby who supports my writing. I enjoy using my family’s attributes when I create my characters. Besides writing, skiing and the outdoors are my two other passions. My favorite pasttime is sitting on the front porch with a cup of coffee. Powerful writing with colorful characters that make you cry, laugh and wish they were real intrigue me. I have a sarcastic sense of humor, can make a joke out of almost anything, but could never do stand-up comedy.

TBR: Tell us about Two Halves and where it's available.
Marta: Two Halves is a YA urban fantasy available on Amazon, Smashwords, and Barnes & Noble.

TBR: Please tantalize us with a story blurb or excerpt.
Marta:
Blurb: Twenty-one-year-old Sarah is a child of a human mother and a vampire father and has suppressed her dark side with serums. The only memory of her mother is when Sarah killed her, soon after birth. Of her father, nothing—just a hatred for his vampire traits that made her kill her own mother.
When a disturbing nightmare foretelling her bleak future stirs the superhuman traits, underworld creatures are beaconed. On the run with William, a man she knows from her dreams, Sarah tries to learn what’s been hidden from her, for a good reason. Had she known her destiny, she may have continued with the serums that kept her hidden.

TBR: What inspired you to write about the theme?
Marta: In March 2009 I just moved to a new city due to hubby's work. It was our first week at the new house and he rented Twilight the movie. I said "What's that?" (Yes, I lived under a rock.) He said "You like Buffy the Vampire Slayer and I read there are vampires in this one so I thought you'd like it."

Then, he poured me a glass of wine and went to put the kids to bed. I watched the movie by myself, loved it, saw that it was based on a book and ran to the computer to find out more. That's when I found Stephenie Meyer's website. I read her biography and how she got to write her novels. I could see myself right there in her shoes *sighs with daydreaming eyes*. I decided I would write a novel too.

The funny part is, just like Ms. Meyer, I had a dream. The first paragraph of Chapter 1 of Two Halves was that dream. I didn't see the characters, but I saw myself as a half breed vampire, who couldn't scar, yet she foresaw it happening. (Yes, Twilight had a huge impact on the dream) I went with that idea for the book.

TBR: Are you a plotter or pantser?
Marta:  Definitely a panster. For most of my work I have the general concept and idea. I sit down and play it out in my head asking myself “What would happen next?” If I know the scene ahead of time, it’s easier to write, so I guess there’s a little bit of plotting, but it rarely happens. For Two Halves the original ending was at chapter 24. My wise editor advised me it didn’t satisfy the reader. She was right and I spent the next three days writing two additional chapters. I knew exactly what the ending should be at that point.

TBR: Do you have a favorite quote you’d like to share?
Marta: “Never say never” - It’s a quote I’ve used for years, used it extensively in Two Halves and believe me, I had it way before Justin Bieber.

TBR: While creating your books, what was one of the most surprising things you learned?
Marta: How difficult it is to keep track of everything in the book. From back stories to character descriptions, their clothing, what they carry in their pockets and making sure all the rules you create for your world (especially when magic is involved) are followed. I know as the author you’re supposed to know everything about them, but when you write 110000 words for your first draft, things tend to slip through.  At one point I had Sarah leave the house in her jeans and end up in shorts. That’s why editing is so important and takes a long time.

TBR: Tease us with one little thing about your fictional world that makes it different from others.
Marta: The world has three main species: humans, vampires and warlocks. Some warlocks turned into demons and want to get rid of all others. That’s where the main characters come into play. They’re destined to stop the extinction.

TBR: What's next for you?
Marta: I am currently editing a new novel I expect to be available this June and I’m working on two more titles that will hopefully be finished and available this year. I can’t seem to stop writing, which I guess is a good thing for a writer. I hope I’ll be able to write for a long time.

TBR: Any other published works?
Marta: “Marked: A Two Halves Novella” which is also available on Amazon, Smashwords and Barnes & Noble. The Novella explains where some of the supporting characters came from and why their role was important in the novel. Although it’s a prequel to
Two Halves, it’s meant to be read after the novel.

TBR: What’s the most challenging aspect of writing? Most rewarding?
Marta: Most challenging is the editing. It’s more difficult than writing and drains all my energy.
Most rewarding is receiving emails from readers telling me how much they enjoyed the book. It’s like being on a constant high of happiness. I’m sure I have more wrinkles on my face because of smiling.

TBR: Where can readers find you on the web?
Marta:
Twitter: @martaszemik
TBR: Thanks for visiting TBR, Marta. Best of luck to you!

TBR welcomes Pippa Jay

TBR: Welcome to TBR, Pippa. Will you share a little bit about yourself?
Pippa: Thanks for having me! I’m mum to three fiery redheads, a wannabe-Jedi and a confirmed caffeine addict with a preference for writing about tortured souls. I’ve been living in the historical town of Colchester in the UK for more than twenty years now, and have no inclination to move.

TBR: Tell us about Keir and where it's available.
Pippa: Keir is a science-fictionromance, releasing with Lyrical Press Inc. on the 7th of May.

TBR: Please tantalize us with a story blurb or excerpt.
Pippa:
Outcast. Cursed. Dying. Is Keir beyond redemption?
For Keirlan de Corizi--the legendary 'Blue Demon' of Adalucien--death seems the only escape from a world where his discolored skin marks him as an oddity and condemns him to life as a pariah. But salvation comes in an unexpected guise: Tarquin Secker, a young woman who can travel the stars with a wave of her hand.
But Quin has secrets of her own. She's spent eternity searching through space and time with a strange band of companions at her back. Defying her friends' counsel, Quin risks her apparent immortality to save Keir. She offers him sanctuary and a new life on her home world, Lyagnius.
When Keir mistakenly unleashes his dormant alien powers and earns instant exile from Quin's home world, will she risk everything to stand by him again?

TBR: How do you develop your characters?
Pippa: Usually I have an image in my head, and a situation that they’re in. How they react determines their main characteristics for me. Names come next if I haven’t already got one, and then their personality quirks and habits.

TBR: Did any music inspire your book? Do you have a playlist?
Pippa: While writing Keir I rediscovered a band called The Rasmus, and I listened to their three latest albums while the words spilled out. Much of the overall theme of Keir is down to their music. I tend to have a ‘standard’ playlist on all the time now when I write, but it’s forever expanding.

TBR: While creating your books, what was one of the most surprising things you learned?
Pippa: That things would just suddenly appear in my story that I hadn’t even thought of. For example, when Keir is on the antagonist’s ship I had this automated guard pop out of nowhere as I was writing. I think I was more surprised than Keir!

TBR: Tease us with one little thing about your fictional world that makes it different from others.
Pippa: You need to keep your thoughts very much to yourself.

TBR: What's next for you?
Pippa: I’m working on a sequel to Keir, an sfr novella called Tethered, a scifi short called Samaritan and a scifi novella titled Gethyon which are all at various stages in the writing/editing process. But nothing with a definite date yet. I’m also in the process of organizing a Midsummer Blog Hop for the SFR Brigade.

TBR: Any other published works?
Pippa: I have a free scifi short up on Smashwords - The Bones of the Sea - that I self-published, and tied into the same universe as Keir although the characters are completely separate.

TBR: What’s the most challenging aspect of writing? Most rewarding?
Pippa: For me, the most challenging part is finding the time to do it. I have three children, aged nine and under, and we have a family policy that I don’t write at weekends (although sometimes I just have to. The main stipulation is that I’m not permanently glued to the computer during the day). So generally I have to get up in the wee small hours of the morning to free write. The most rewarding? When someone tells me they’ve enjoyed it.

TBR: Who are some of your favorite authors and books? What are you reading now?
Pippa: Hmmm, there’s quite a list. In terms of scifi, at the moment I’m reading Neal Asher and Jaine Fenn. I adore Fenn’s Hidden Empire series, and I’m waiting impatiently for the next book. For fantasy, I’m a big Terry Pratchett fan, but I’m also devoted to Lauri J Owen’s Ember series, and The Lightbringer Trilogy by Brent Weeks.

TBR: Where can readers find you on the web?
Pippa:  My main blog site is: http://pippajay.blogspot.com/ or you can find me as Pippa Jay on Facebook. I also have a book page on there: Keir - Beyond Redemption. And of course Twitter as @pippajaygreen

TBR: Readers, Pippa is giving away ae ebook of Keir to one lucky commenter. She'll pick a winner next week and announce the winner here.
Thanks for visiting TBR, Pippa! All the best to you.
