TBR welcomes Pippa Jay

TBR: Welcome to TBR, Pippa Jay. Will you share a little bit about yourself? Pippa: Hello! I write scifi, sometimes with a splash of romance, drink far too much coffee and spend my spare moments trying to play guitar and doing freestyle street dance. When I'm not torturing my characters, that is. Bwah-ha-haa!

TBR: Tell us about Gethyon and where it's available. Pippa: Gethyon is a YA/NA scifi, what I call my Star Wars story. It's about a young man struggling to find his place in the universe, and discovering he has some dangerous talents that lead into trouble. There are spaceships, a dark entity, and a sassy bounty hunter for him to contend with. Buy links can be found here - http://pippajay.blogspot.co.uk/2012/01/gethyon-excerpt-and-links.html

TBR: Please tantalize us with a story blurb or excerpt. Pippa: His father died. His mother abandoned him. In the depths of space, darkness seeks him.
Abandoned by his mother after his father’s death, Gethyon Rees feels at odds with his world and longs to travel the stars. But discovering he has the power to do so leaves him scarred for life. Worse, it alerts the Siah-dhu—a dark entity that seeks his kind for their special abilities—to his existence, and sets a bounty hunter on his trail.

When those same alien powers lead Gethyon to commit a terrible act, they also aid his escape. Marooned on the sea-world of Ulto Marinos, Gethyon and his twin sister must work off their debt to the Seagrafter captain who rescued them while Gethyon puzzles over their transportation. How has he done this? And what more is he capable of?

Before he can learn any answers, the Wardens arrive to arrest him for his crime. Can his powers save him now? And where will he end up next?

TBR: What inspired you to write about the theme? Pippa: The idea had been hovering at the back of my mind ever since I'd finished my debut novel Keir. I wanted to write something set in the same 'universe', but with more spaceships and technology. A certain Tatoine farmboy also had a heavy influence, as well as my eldest son who was the same age as my hero at the start of the book.

TBR: Are you a plotter or pantser? Pippa: Pantser!

TBR: Did any music inspire your book? Do you have a playlist? Pippa: I didn't have a specific playlist for the story, but my writing music at the time featured My Chemical Romance and Elliott Minor rather heavily.

TBR: While creating your books, what was one of the most surprising things you learned? Pippa: The music I listen to has a far greater influence on my writing than I thought!

TBR: What's next for you? Pippa: I have a short story coming out around midsummer as part of the Science Fiction Romance Brigade's first anthology. It'll be a free read and features stories by eight other authors, including Linnea Sinclair. I'm very excited about it!
TBR: Any other published works? Pippa: The Bones of the Sea, a scifi short. Keir, a scifi romance novel. Terms & Conditions Apply, a scifi romance short.
TBR: What’s the most challenging aspect of writing? Most rewarding? Pippa: When I had my youngest child home, I used to say the biggest challenge was finding time to write. But even with them all at school now, I STILL struggle to get as much writing done as I'd like, even without the real life stuff there is to do. The most rewarding has to be getting good feedback. I get a little teary every time I read a good review for one of my stories.

TBR: What’s the most interesting comment you have received about your books? Pippa: I’ve had several comparisons to Doctor Who for my novel Keir - it was actually influenced by a DW story I wrote as a teen, but I thought I'd come a long way since then. And someone picked up on several religious connotations in my sfr short Terms & Conditions Apply - intriguing, as I'm not religious at all.
TBR: Who are some of your favorite authors and books? What are you reading now? Pippa: I love Jaine Fenn and Neal Asher, when I'm not reading works by my fellow SFR Brigaders. Next on my to-read list is Queen of Nowhere by Jaine Fenn.

TBR: Thanks for visiting TBR, Pippa. All the best to you.
